The legislative statute that has improved intelligence-led policing is referred to as the Patriot Act. The law has particularly helped in fighting serious crimes such as terrorism that have traditionally affected the United States. The law has broadened the government's arsenal to investigate and bring to book serious offenders of the law. Notably, this provision in the constitution has positively impacted the intelligence-led policing by impacting information sharing. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the intelligence community at large have markedly improved thanks to the Patriotic Act. Many investigative agencies believe that the law helped erode the bureaucratic and legal wall that separated the criminal and intelligence sides of an investigation (The Patriot Act: Justice Department Claims Success).

According to many investigative agencies, the wall was responsible for the failure that existed in the buildup of the 9/11 attacks. However, critics have complained that the law has increased security agencies' ability to spy on the people. On the other hand, supporters have lauded it for eliminating the double standards that have often existed in the investigative rules. For instance, the Patriotic Act has a specific provision known as the National Security Letter (In re National Security Letter). It has significantly expanded the FBI's authority to demand personal customer records from a host of institutions, including internet service providers, credit companies, and financial institutions (NATIONAL SECURITY LETTERS).

Therefore, this makes it easier to track any terrorist activity. Terrorism is an example of an organized crime that often relies on several organizations, individuals, and groups. The Patriotic Act allows the necessary security stakeholders to track crucial intelligence that could assist in the investigative process. The Patriotic Act allows for the sharing of case-sensitive information that could be used by a multi-agency operation that seeks to annihilate criminal behavior (The Patriot Act: Justice Department Claims Success).
