The population of interest includes the families and children. Social workers have essential functions when working with this group of people. They assist families in improving their relationships and coping in difficult situations that present in life. Some of the situations that social workers help families and children to traverse through include illness, divorce, and death. Therefore, when working with families and children, social workers can act as counselors. In this capacity, social workers assist individuals to identify the problems, create goals, and find the solutions to the issues affecting their lives (Garbarino, 2017). Also, counseling enhances positive family relations and ensures that children have a positive identity about themselves.

According to the systems theory, the behavior is subject to the influence of certain factors that work in a system. Therefore, in a systems theory, the social worker must analyze and observe systems that contribute to the behavior and welfare of a person. It is, therefore, their role to work and strengthen the systems. In this population, the family network functions as the system that affects the behavior of both members and children (Garbarino, 2017). The social worker must work to strengthen familial ties and empower children to grow in their families with the required morals and positive behaviors.

Developing knowledge of this population requires the social worker to engage in scientific research. Data collection can be done through self-reports and ethnographic studies to understand how families associate with their children. Other than research, critical thought can also play a fundamental role in understanding families and children. This requires families to immerse themselves into their respective families, critique their strengths and weaknesses, and finally apply it to the other families. By doing this, the social worker will understand that family problems are not unique, and what affects one family could likely affect the other.
