While we live, it is vital to reflect on some critical issues that affect us. Some things may seem obvious, but when we think about them, they become very complex. My objective in this essay is to reflect on the question of death, speculate on how it is possible to know anything as well as attempt to discuss how we know what is right and wrong.

What happens to a person at death?

Sire (2009) suggests some possibilities; that people may reincarnate, turn into a more superior form, become a shadow of themselves or reach the end of personal existence. In my view I think people reach the end of their existence once they die, and cannot turn into any other form. I always ask myself the question; who or where was I two hundred years ago? Nobody can for sure tell where or what form they were two centuries ago. Therefore, I think the same thing will happen once we die. We simply fade away, and pave way for other people to come into existence.

Why is it possible to know anything at all?

I think knowing anything comes from experience and instincts. For example, when children are born, they are not aware of their environment or even themselves. However, when they feel hungry, they cry and their mothers breastfeed them. Out of experience, they begin to realize where they can get milk. Besides, as children develop, they know who their parents are, and subsequently learn a language from their parents. It is, therefore, possible to know something because of the environment, body mechanisms, and the people with whom we associate.

How do we know what is right and wrong?

Most prominently, every person has a conscious mind. It is this conscious mind that enables us to think rationally and objectively. Besides, the conscious evaluates the response of others to our actions (Lantos, 2000). Consciously, wrong things are those which we do not want other people to do to us and vice versa. Naturally, our bodies sense pain and pleasure and these feelings are transmitted to the brain. Similarly, our brains, through the conscious, can differentiate between what is right and wrong.

Conclusively, it is evident that some of the issues that affect us can be complex. However, it is possible to speculate. Knowing anything and differentiating between right and wrong are consequences of the mind and the environment. With death, just as everything has a beginning so must it have and end.
