This video shows Kami being a very understanding social worker. Kami observes social work core values and ethics. Kami values the dignity and worth of a person by treating Sheila with dignity and respect. For instance, she remains calm and polite in her responses even when Sheila is rude all the time. Kami is recognizant of her duties to both Sheila and the society as whole. For example, Kami advises Sheila to be honest about any other income she might be getting so that she does not get tangled up in any legal troubles.

This video shows Kami not trying to promote Sheila’s self-determination. For example, when Shiela said she could not work because she had a kid, Kami gave an example of her situation too about coming to work late because of her kid. Kami, instead of encouraging Shiela that she could manage her situation too, she just says that the system seems to be broken. This does not promote Sheila’s self-determination rather she blames it on the system.
What is the role of the social worker in this setting? How do you see yourself fulfilling that role? How would you engage in ways similar to how this social worker does? In what ways would you be different?
The role of the social worker in this setting is to find ways that she can provide her clients with assistance, services or referrals to other agencies that might be helpful to them. I would be great at fulfilling this role. Like the social worker, I would observe the dignity and worth of a person by treating clients with dignity and respect no matter how difficult they are. Unlike Sheila, I would encourage people to find jobs and work for their living, by trying to explain to them how they can be more helpful and productive.
