A human right, as defined by the United Nations, is the freedom that should be guaranteed to an individual based on them being human (United Nations, 2018). Human rights include the right to life, freedom from torture, freedom of expression and many more. Each person should be entitled to these rights without segregation. In this paper, a summary of the rights and lack of rights of people in the course of their life will be discussed. The discussion will be divided into sections, which are: family formation, childhood, adolescent, and grandparenting.
At the family formation, various rights are enjoyed by the individuals. The issue comes in when parents adopt new birth technologies to conceive. The power of the fetus to understand its origins and that of the donor to remain anonymous conflict. In some instances, the right of the fetus can be waivered in favor of the donor’s anonymity. However, if adverse impacts are expected on the fetus, the right to anonymity can be waivered, and the infant gets to enjoy its power.

During childhood, a debate arises on whether children should enjoy universal human rights. It is argued that since the children are human in every way as the adults, they should enjoy their rights. However, the children rights are controlled by the parents since logically; children cannot be expected to make critical decisions like drive a car. The issue has sparked emotions from activists. Theories have been developed to describe the relationship between the rights of children and their parents. Stewardship theory that stipulates parents be passive and should only guide their children best explains the situation in this category.
As children transition to adolescents, they are faced with the choice of needs versus deeds. In the adolescent stage, the rights are not thoroughly enjoyed since the adolescents represent the transition between adulthood and childhood. However, the issue of delinquency and taking responsibility sparks the debate on what rights are allowable to the adolescents and to what degree should they take responsibility. In the final category, grandparents are faced with a choice of taking care of their kin and relaxing. It is expected for them to feel they have a right to rest, which they certainly do, but the demographic changes have brought a limitation to that right. They now have to take care of their grandchildren.
In all these categories, there exist two situations in which the person may or may not enjoy their right. The issue of rights and responsibilities that arises during the course of life is an important aspect when dealing with complex human transitions.
