Extreme violence, especially in one's early ages, can cause long term psychological effects such as fear, distrust, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.

Carina, a twenty-eight-year-old lawyer, experienced extreme violence as a child. At the age of twelve, Carina lost both her siblings, Lee and Kelvin, to mob violence. She remembers that day vividly as they were together, and she witnessed the whole tragedy. She counts herself lucky to be alive.

Carina and her elder brothers had gone grocery shopping, and on their way back home, they encountered a rowdy protest. The protest was over the elections, and the protesters disagreed with the outcome. They had barricaded the roads, and they were burning car tires. Carina's brothers stepped out of the car for peaceful negotiation to enable them to pass. The demonstrators were intoxicated and wanted nothing to do with peace. They maltreated her brothers and beat them up badly. Both of them suffered severe injuries and succumbed. She was rescued from the vehicle by a good samaritan

Carina was traumatized by this experience, and this has affected her as a wife and a first-time mum. She has developed fear and anxiety, causing her to be very overprotective of her five-year-old son, Carlos. She never allows him to play outside or to be alone at any time. She has a hard time trusting his caretakers and only trusts her husband with their son's safety.

Carina says that she feels guilty for being the only survivor and feels that she failed her family. She wishes that she could have done more to help her brothers. Now that she is responsible for her family, she feels that she must ensure that nothing bad ever happens to her son. Carina's husband, Diego, is very supportive and understanding. He reassures her that their son is safe and accompanies her to her weekly therapy sessions.
