Question 1: Time spent on each device each day
Device | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 |
Mobile Phone | 3hrs | 3hrs 45min | 2hrs 30m in | 4hrs |
Laptop | 5hrs | 7hrs | 4hrs 30min | 3hrs |
TV | 1hrs 45 min | 1hr | 3hrs | 2hrs |
iPod | 1hrs | 30min | 2hrs | 3hrs 30min |
Question 2: Level of productivity/unproductivity
Day one
Less that 10% of my phone-time was spent making voice or video calls to friends. About half of the time was spend chatting with some friends individually or in group chats. Most of the conversations revolved around entertainment over the weekend and was generally unproductive. I also spent about 20 minutes chatting with a friend about school work and this was very productive. The balance of the time was spent on social medial including Facebook and Twitter mainly following on issues relating to the oncoming elections. I would consider this to be mainly productive. The 5 hours on the laptop were predominantly school work with short intermissions for social media. I would consider it as productive. On TV, I watched the news and a popular comedy. This was mainly productive for me. Lastly, the iPod took some of my time before bed listening to music and this was generally unproductive.

Day 2
Phone use assumed the same trend as day one. There was however a call about school work and a further chat with some school friends which were both productive. The laptop time increased due to an intermission to watch a film in the middle of school work only that the film session was unproductive. The TV time was spent watching a popular drama series, hence generally unproductive. I was quite tired so I only listened to music briefly on the iPod during bedtime.
Day 3
There was less access to the internet and very limited chatting with friends. I spent some of the time researching on some school work, phone time was generally productive. I also spent some phone time on social media as before and this was mainly unproductive. Laptop time was mainly social media use and some school work mainly studying. I watched a movie on TV and a continuation of the drama series I watched the previous day. This was unproductive. I later spent quite some time listening to a new music collection on the iPod.
Day 4
Day 4 was more of a leisure day as group chats took most of my phone time as I listened to music on the iPod. This was unproductive. The laptop time was dominated by social media and video chats, hence mainly unproductive too. On TV, I watched a movie and this was also unproductive.
Question 3: Reflection
It is clear from the foregoing that a good amount of my time was taken by phone use, which was mainly unproductive. The phone is quite useful in urgent and concise research work but also a major distraction. I genuinely believe that phone use limits my overall productivity per day and ought to be reduced. Further, a phone call or phone chat in the middle of school work causes a distraction that outlasts the call or chat due to loss of concentration and reflection.
The computer use is mainly productive except when watching movies. This does not need any changes, but only discipline in limiting social media use during schoolwork time. TV on the other hand mainly takes the generally unproductive hours of the day such as the evenings. It is also quite limited and sometimes helps in unwinding. I would, therefore, consider retaining it. However, the iPod takes a larger part of the most important time; sleep time. I seldom get enough bedtime and the time spent on the iPod exacerbates the situation. The iPod should be relegated to other times other than bedtime. Safe for the phone and iPod use that needs serious regulation, I would consider my technology use quite positive and an integral part of my day.
