The article “Nurses’ Numeracy and Graphical Literacy: Informing Studies of Clinical Decision Support Interfaces” emphasizes on the need to evaluate the literacy of all registered nurses when it comes to analyzing numbers and interpreting graphs. With the advent of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), thousands of patient longitudinal information can be accessed and this more often than not may present a challenge for clinicians when it comes to effectively processing and integrating this information to make accurate patient care decisions. Moreover, the utilization of Clinical Decision Support (CDS) has the potential of revolutionizing care quality and evidence-based decision making. However, it needs to be considerate of clinicians’ numeracy and graph literacy levels so as to allow for correct interpretation of the information provided by the CDS. The article implies that there is a negative relationship between the age of the nurses and the graph literacy. Therefore, I would recommend that older nurses be given special training that would help them bridge this gap and improve their graph literacy skills. Moreover, seminars and educative programmes should be established to improve both the graph and numerical literacy of all nurses especially the 58% that have low numeracy scores and the 55% that have below average graph literacy scores.
The use of evidence-based statistics can significantly improve nursing practice as they factor in the best available evidence along with clinical expertise and judgement in collaboration with the preferences of the patient to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Moreover, the statistics involved justifies the evidence and ensures that the evidence is solid and can be reliably utilized to offer relevant patient care. This approach offers a platform in which clinicians can be engaged in reflective practice to come up with creative strategies in offering care while at the same time continuously learning different ways of providing quality care.
