Question 1

Many factors can lead to the success of virtual teams. One is the culture of the organization. It includes the organizational norm regarding how information is flowing, the sharing of leadership responsibilities, and cross-boundary collaboration (Watkins, 2013). All these factors help create organizational norms and values that promote collaboration and respect within the team. Another attribute is proper communication through the establishment of friendly and understandable channels.

A virtual team can also fail due to ineffective leadership, which is needed to ensure that the team meets the performance objective. Poor leadership can cause some members to disengage, and this can only derail the progress. Secondly, the absence of clear roles for everybody involved is also a problem with virtual teams. Lack of clear roles means a lack of accountability and focus.

Question 2

There are specific characteristics of a well-functioning team that overlaps with the attributes of virtual teams' success. An example is the assignment of specific roles to people. As Watkins (2013) states, every team member must have a specific role to play for the success of any team. Also important is the work prioritization. Members of a properly functioning team have to understand tasks that should be done first before others to facilitate timely completion of the team project. A well functioning team needs a proper decision-making strategy. All members should have a say in the process so that they can execute every plan effectively. It points to collaboration and engagement in the virtual team scenario. All team members have to actively take part in the group deliberations without feeling left out.
