It is very true that America has the highest number of prisoners in the world. Most of the prisoners are non-violent offenders. Even when the crime rate goes down, the prisoner's population goes up. Those people who win elections are the ones that are tough on crime and those who view offenders as worst people in the world .courts and judges gain fame because of being hard on offenders. A large population of the people do not influence politics and cannot vote because of the bad crime record .There are bad and ineffective laws which put people in prisons which is bad and dehumanizing to the people.
Prisoners undergo harsh conditions such as isolation and sexual harassment. They are deprived of their human rights while even those in charge become unresponsive. Most of the youth in prisons face trauma because of day to day sexual violence. The most powerful people in society give bribes to the authorities to get out their victims who are more dangerous to the society than other prisoners who have less influence. The worst thing is that with all problems that prisoners face, the authorities do nothing about it. The best way to deal with sexual violence is to limit cross-gender violence and being supervised by people of the opposite sex. In some prisons, prisoners do not get adequate food, water, and ventilation. It is even abuse of the natural laws of justice. There is less medical attention, the cells are in bad conditions, and mentally disabled prisoners are beaten and stubbed.

I contend with the view that instead of all these prisons, there should be a better way of changing people. Rehabilitation centers can do better, and equal treatment should be given to both African American and purely American prisoners. Prisoners should be exposed to necessities such as civic education, which can change their character and help prevent reoccurrence of crimes. I think that individuals in charge of the correction facilities need to evaluate their system and strive to impact the prisoners positively.
