The co-founder of the software giant Microsoft, Bill Gates, was the richest man in the world from 1995 to 2009, after which he has exchanged the position with Jeff Bezos (Fernandez, 2018). Bill’s impact on the company has been tremendous, especially considering his unique leadership style that has set him apart from his counterparts in the industry. The most significant legacy he has left is undoubtedly his establishment of the company itself and its development with him at the helm. His primary strength is focus. Once he sets on course to do something, he does not veer from it. He wanted to develop software as soon as he developed a passion for it and has continued to do so for the better part of his life (Dearlove, 2007). In the same line, Bill is passionate. He has always been drawn to software technologies. Therefore, if his instincts tell him to follow a certain path, he is bound to do so. Bill’s other significant strength is creativity – he has continued to improve upon his products and maintained dominance in the industry as a result. His weaknesses are tied to the areas he does not enjoy but are critical parts of his business, such as accounting and sales, and human resource (Koontz, 2010).

Bill Gates’s leadership style is participatory. While he held a strong passion for software, he appreciated the contributions of individual members to the success of the company as a whole. To tackle his own weaknesses, Bill delegated the duties he could not handle. He would tend to bring in people to help him with issues related to, say, management and hiring (Fernandez, 2018). Concomitantly, Bill understood that hiring the wrong people can have detrimental effects on the company that can take long to undo (Fernandez, 2018). Therefore, while he may not have been involved in the day-to-day activities of these areas, he remained aware of their progress and their impact on Microsoft, which enhanced his legacy in the company and the world at large (Dearlove, 2007).
