Before the 1900s, there were no labor unions that could advocate for employee rights. During this period, workers were mistreated, employers were not concerned with employee welfare. Employees worked in unsafe workplace environments. In the 1900s, labor unions were primarily formed to advocate for fair wages and a secure and safer working environment for employees. Labor unions were formed to create platforms and movements that could intervene on behalf of workers. These unions were also formed to advocate against workers' unfair treatment at the workplace, which was rampant in many companies, businesses, and farming plantations. Lastly, labor union aimed at fighting against the slavery of employees ( Milkman & Luce, 2017) . Before the formation of labor union in the 1900s, employees were treated as slaves. They were beaten and harassed at workplaces. Some farmworkers lost their lives while many suffered severe injuries.

Labor laws were formed to be observed by all employers. Employers were required to provide conducive and safe working environments ( Milkman & Luce, 2017) . The formation of labor unions assisted in drafting related labor rules that stipulate how labor relate cases are addressed. However, a struggle between business and labor unions were witnessed because companies paid more attention to profit maximization to improve shareholders worth rather than listening to employees concerns like providing safe and secure work environments ( Milkman & Luce, 2017) .
