Containers are very important components in the maritime industry as they are key in ensuring movement of goods from one location to another. Every shipping company has a set of containers whose purpose is to facilitate movement of goods as well as ensure order and organization in their day to day activities.

Every other day at any port in the world, containers are loaded onto specific ships from the port or unloaded from the ships to the port. These containers are destined to travel from one place to another through the ocean based on business arrangements. The containers have identification numbers that store information regarding to the goods it is carrying, weight of the container, destination as well as the owner of the goods. This feature by itself, is a security feature that prevents confusion at the port owing to the large number of containers at the port.

Moreover, containers are durable and reusable which means they can be used to transport various commodities at different times without needing replacement. Majority of the containers have a lifespan of 20 years which to many shipping companies makes a lot of business sense. Furthermore, containers can be piled on top of each other during transportation and they automatically lock into each other reducing the chances of loosing goods while on transit.

When it comes to the air freight industry, parallels of standard shipping containers exist but in this case air freight is transported using the unit load device (ULD) system. The system repacks cargo into smaller containers and onto pallets for transport on both cargo planes and standard passenger aircraft.
