Introduction
Containerization is a shipping method in which large amount of merchandise is packaged into large standardized containers (Karan, 2016). It is the most convenient method of transporting freight goods through sea. Maritime transportation is the back bone of global trade due to its ability of moving large quantities of merchandise over long distances.
Advantages of Containerization
Safety and security - The use of containers reduces theft of goods since the containers can only be opened at the point of origin and by the buyer. The contents are unknown to carriers. In addition, containers have unique identification numbers that prevents mix-ups of cargo during transportation.

Flexibility - There are different types of containers adapted to specific functions such as refrigeration, ferrying dry cargo and liquid cargo. Containers can also be used to transport commodities, manufactured goods and refrigerated perishable goods.
Increased overall productivity – The use of containers allows product managers to save on resources and time by achieving efficiency in software delivery of cargo.
Component re-use – Containers can be reused to transport other goods therefore saving on costs of purchasing different containers each time a product needs to be ferried overseas.
Relationship between Air Freight Industry and Maritime Freight Industry
Cost – Transporting cargo by air is very expensive as compared to transporting by sea.
Capacity – transportation by air limits the amount of cargo that a retailer can transport since there are limits to the amount required to be transported by air as compared to sea transport where more cargo can be transported
On the other hand, both are reliable when transporting perishable goods due to availability of containers with refrigeration facilities. In both, safety and security of the cargo being transported are ensured.
