The research was conducted by having a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) among 797 inpatient nurses that had worked for an orthopedic department in one of the 29 hospitals in Sichuan. Rachel is very clear in determining how and where the research was done. She is even specific that survey was considered, utilizing a questionnaire.

The essential information is to determine the number of respondents or participants that were involved in the study. He also involved a good number of respondents that would make the findings reliable. Indeed, one can rely on the study finding that nurses in Sichuan undergo a burden of LBP in the same way the rest of the world experience it.

The sampling procedure is very critical in determining the most reliable information about the entire population. After a sampling is done, the ultimate population chosen becomes a representative of the entire population. The researcher was effective in gathering information on the number of inpatient nurses that would be representative of Sichuan as a region. Researchers may only investigate a part of the entire population. In the study reviewed by Rachel, the sampling procedure was definite because a reliably higher number of participants could be established with the inclusion criteria involving nurses that have been working for more than a year. This was the best representative sample as the researcher could clearly obtain the most reliable findings.

The design of the study does clearly tie to main objectives. This is because the main objective was to determine the occurrence of low back pain among nurses in Sichuan, China and to relate it with the situation in other regions of the world. Accordingly, the researcher only focused on Sichuan, China and could only compare the results with other regions if she had the statistics of what was happening in those regions as far as low back pain in nurses is concerned.

Student 1: Enedia

Hi Enedia. You are very clear in your analysis of the article posted by Jerry Villa-Chauvin in terms of elaborating the data collection procedure that the researcher utilized of survey. I can support that the use of 734 surveys made the findings more reliable and representative of the entire population. However, you did not strike a balance in terms of being sensitive of gender. The number of women was far much higher than men; therefore, the findings of the psychological assessment by using the burnout and depression scales would have a bias towards one gender than the other. You were also specific on giving details of the survey utilized, by indicating that it was a self-administered survey whereby the participants (teachers) comfortably and confidently gave their responses to aid in the study. You failed to expound on the analytic approach that the researcher had took. For instance, the point that the aim of the researcher was to establish the extent to which burnout, depression, and anxiety scale items suggest on the prevalence of the conditions of interest. By elaborating on this aim, it puts the description on the survey method used in perspective. The data collected from the survey would be very instrumental to have a clear correlation between depression and burnout scales.

Student 2: Tara

Hi Tara. Your post was specific in terms of indicating that Rachel Tuazon (the researcher) utilized a cross - sectional survey by indicating the specific sampling method used, as cluster sampling. The self-designed questionnaire goes hand in hand with cluster sampling. Again, the 783 responses from the participants would be a sufficient representation in terms of establishing the prevalence of lower back pain in nurses in Sichuan province, China. Since this study is comparable to the cases of lower back pain in other regions of the world; I feel that the cross sectional survey could have been complemented with a systematic literature review that focuses on the prevalence of lower back pain in other regions.
