The United States economy is considered the largest in the world by GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Despite this fact, a significant divide has been identified in the American economy over recent years. America is known because of the high level of consumerism and even considered the second largest according to purchasing power. Despite all the factors that make America's robust economy a success, a divide arises because of the disparity in income levels. There is a huge gap between incomes earned by the wealthiest individuals in American compared to the poor, which resulting in the economic divide. The disparity in income distribution is associated with different social, economic classes, including the working class, middle class, and upper class.

Through advances in technology and media in the information age, the economic disparity in the United States has been portrayed through deliberate reporting methods. The media has significantly impacted the economic inequality in America by influencing individual perceptions about different social classes. The media reports about lifestyles of the wealthiest people in America, which affects the attitudes of the lower classes creating conflicting ideas that influence economic inequality. The criminal justice system has a significant impact on the economic divide experienced in the United States because most incarcerations are done on social bias. Individuals in the lower class and non-white groups are more likely to be incarcerated compared to the upper-class groups and white individuals. The bias towards upper class and white individuals has led to the economic divide in America, resulting in adverse social perceptions. The American criminal justice system appears to favor and extend favorable privileges towards the rich, white, and individuals in the upper social class compare to minority groups who are mostly in the lower social class.
