The Evan Edward Worthing High School is located in Houston, Texas. The institution serves grades 9 through to 12 as part of Houston Independent School District (HISD). The primary one of the secondary’s school location is in Sunnyside. The school has had a steady population of between 600 and 700 students enrolled in an academic year since 2013-14 (Malisow, 2016). The name was given after a Houston real-estate developer who set-up a scholarship trust for African American HISD students as specified in his will. Majority of the people living in this area are African Americans (97%) with a few Hispanics also found in the area.
Worthington High School is only one in 52 HISD high schools with 100% minority enrollment. The student body makeup demonstrates high levels of equality with a 50-50 split between males and females. The proportion of students who come from low income households is at a staggering 95% where median family income is believed to be less than 50% of the Houston metro area average (Mulvaney, 2016). It is such economic struggles that have caused poor academic performance where Advanced Placement coursework and exams are managed by 43% with none of them having passed in the past year.

The demographics clearly show that the community around the school is incapable of raising funds to improve the state of the school (Faulkner, Romaniuk, & Stern, 2016). With one of the lowest median household income in the state, it is less likely that the families can afford to pay a fee for students who participate in multiple sports like basketball, volleyball, football, track and field, and cross country. However, donors from outside the community could help in improving the overall outcome of the school (Rhine, & Flannery, 2015). Professional footballers, basketball players, and other alumni celebrities of the school can help improve its condition.
