Over the last couple of decades, the public has become increasingly aware of environmental affairs, greenhouse gases, and their contribution to global warming. Consumers are asking more questions about the products they are using and how green they are. Organizations are expected to reveal how big their carbon footprint is and how green their supply chain is A green supply chain integrates sustainable environmental procedures with the established supply chain. Greening the supply chain involves value creation and value addition throughout the entire chain. It entails the reduction of air, water, and waste pollution. It involves recycling and reuse of products, waste reduction, reduction of manufacturing expenses, greater assets efficacy, and ultimately a customer satisfied with green products and services.

A primary green supply chain includes green purchasing, green manufacturing, green distribution, reuse and recycle by the consumer, recovery by the supplier, and a green reverse logistics. Other means of greening the supply chain include reduction of shipping, consolidating and enhancing material and use of packaging, and taking out hazardous material out of the supply chain (Khan, 2018). The result is less fossil fuel burned, fewer packaging products consumed, and lower expenses in handling and getting rid of material. Organizations are also, in the long run, benefiting from a green supply chain through cost cutting and more profits. There are areas in the supply chain where improvements can increase an organization’s profits (Murray, 2019). By re-organization of the company’s supply chain in planning, purchase, use of material, and distribution, savings are often made, and this is an added benefit of greening the supply chain.

The greener a company’s supply chain is, the more attractive it is to consumers. The level of public awareness of green products and services is on the rise. An improved public image about being green is a marketing boon and a public relations strategy.
