This can be attributed to a number of factors chief among them being increased computer ownership and the use and overdependence on the computers. The criminals have exploited these factors among many other in perpetuating digital crime. Computer ownership has increased over the past ten years due to the availability of reliable and cheaper models in the market (Dawson, 2015). Also, the usage and overdependence on the computer can be attributed to the application of the internet to perform activities such as transfer of money and online purchases. In their daily usage, loopholes have developed on computer security which has opened opportunities for digital crimes to thrive.
The common forms of digital crime are hacking, phishing, identity theft, and even distribution of child pornography. Hacking is the misuse of website and computer networks for malicious reasons. Phishing involves the use of illegitimate email messages to obtain personal information from the Internet recipients. Hacking and phishing record the highest regarding digital crimes in the society today. They are common because they involve the manipulation of the internet users’ ignorance such as with the case of phishing (Smith & Dhillon, 2017). It is upon the internet to be more vigilant and ensure they take security measures such as installing software that prevents the entry of malware. The government should take stringent measures against those involved in digital crimes due to their impact on the economic progress of the country.
