Discussion
Corrections and punishments have changed over time. In the past, the culture of an individual determined the type of punishment they would undergo. The philosophy that supports correction is the retribution and rehabilitation associated with it (Duriez, Sullivan, Latessa, & Lovins, 2018). Different methods have been used over time for punishment purposes. In the past approaches such as being exiled and frogged publicly were used. It came a period where correctional facilities were established. The law offenders were given heavy punishment as a way of paying for the crime. However, that did not deter people from committing a crime. Reforms in the correctional facilities called for changing the punishment approaches. The inmates would receive training in preparation for being reintegrated back to society (History of corrections). Prison time was seen as a period where the inmates would ponder on their actions and repent. There are programs which also prepare the inmates on getting back to society. The changes in the correctional approaches were due to the unsuccessful of the previous methods. The prisoners, for example, thieves would still go back to stealing after prison release. However, in the current method, prisoners have skills such as carpentry which they can use after being released and that helps them to avoid breaking the law again.

Hello Jamie,
I enjoyed reading your work and the way you have analyzed the philosophy of punishment. I believe that the change in the correctional approach from harsh punishment to improved correctional methods has helped to reduce mental illness associated with confinement (Duriez, Sullivan, Latessa, & Lovins, 2018). The inmates are now treated better; for instance, they are well fed and protected from harassment by fellow prisoners. The current correctional method is also beneficial due to the training the prisoners receive.

Hello Cynthia,
I found your history of the correctional facilities interesting. The history of very precise but I think that even 1682, there were still other methods used for punishing those who offended others and broke the law (History of corrections). The probation and parole methods are still used in the present, and they help to give first offenders a chance to change or monitor the actions of a person after being released from jail.
