The talk by Nick Marks made me feel optimistic about the future and made me realize certain things. For instance, it is true that lately there are a lot of apocalyptic movies and a focus on how human kind will eventually become extinct. This talk affects me because, it is clear that there are some countries that are purposefully taking less from our planet and yet are very happy. I would like to be part of the people that actively help sustain the earth and find happiness. The Ted talk by Nick Bostrom was a bit grim and made me feel a bit sad about the things pointed out. It is evident that we have slowly but surely been enhancing ourselves and now at a much higher rate with technology. We have enhancers for moods, looks and way of thinking. Sadly, this is true and we may indeed lose our humanity on this constant search to try and fix ourselves, which is a very disturbing prospect.
As a certified rehabilitation counselor I have seen the effects of mood enhancers, they do greatly assist clients, but they also have their pitfalls. Some clients whom I work with suffer with some serious emotional issues and can feel they can only function well when they take medication to suppress certain emotions. This is beneficial to them because they can live fairly normal lives, but some tend to be heavily reliant on mood enhancing or suppressing medication. More and more medications are surfacing that are intended to assist people with intrinsic issues, this also means more and more people rely on them. The implications are that people will stop trying to use other methods and simply go for what they believe is a quick fix, which can result in altering their humanity in the long run. I do my best to offer alternative options like cognitive exercises which try to make these clients embrace their issues and live with them and not try to change themselves.
