You work in a medical environment and you are often on call. Because your supervisor needs to be able to get in touch with you and your two co-workers at all times, he offers to pay your phone bills. In exchange, he wants you and your co-workers to collaborate and research monthly data plans to be sure he is getting the best deal for each of you. Your boss expects you to write a memo including your research and findings about Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile plans. Find the best financial option for you and your co-workers.

In Excel:

Search for information online about the cost of data plans for each of the following companies: Verizon, AT&T, and T Mobile. Create tables in excel to compare At&t, Verizon, and T mobile monthly costs. In the first column of each table, list the GB and in the second column list the corresponding monthly payment. Find a linear model using excel that estimates the cost per month given the GB    for each company.   (11 points)

In a word Document:

Are these exact models? Why or why not? (11 points)

These models are not exact. This is because though they may represent the data cost per GB per month for each of the companies, these costs are prone to change with time. Another point that makes the models not to be exact is that some companies have provided the data cost for only particular GB which is not provided by their competitors. Therefore, estimation was used to ensure that each GB figure has a monthly cost for all the three companies. This estimation may be skewed either to the right or to the left. However, the models can give comparison and trends and therefore can be used to make decisions on which model is cheaper.

What does the slope of your model represent? (11 points)

The slope of the model represents the cost of monthly data per GB for each of the company. The steeper the slope, the higher the cost and vice versa.

Which model do you think is the most accurate and why? (11 points)

The most accurate model in this case is the one for Verizon. This is because Verizon had provided the data on each of the GB that were tabulated and therefore the GB and the monthly cost for each GB are what has been provided by the company. For the other companies, though they had data for most of the tabulated GB values, the data on some of the tabulated GB values was still missing and this makes them less accurate.

Under what circumstances does your model make sense? (Hint: Consider plans with unlimited data, Is there such a thing as negative data?) (11 points)

The model makes sense when there are no plans with unlimited data. This is because the main issue that was under investigation was the cost difference and in a situation where there is unlimited data, it will not make sense to create a model because the point will be just to compare the cost of unlimited data and that is all. The model make sense when the cost is constantly changing for every GB in all the companies.

On Graph Paper:

Graph all three lines on the same grid using graph paper. Be sure to label your lines, axes and scales. Include your graph in your report. (11 points)

Findings: Use your linear models/graphs that you found to help you determine which plan is the best financially. (11 points)

The plan that is best financially is obtained by looking at the slope of the models. This means that the company with the lowest slope is the one that is best financially. In this case T-mobile is best financially since its slope is the lowest.

Write a MEMO to your Boss

Work together with your "co-workers" to write a memo and explain your findings and recommendation to your boss on which plan he should purchase for each of you or for all of you together. (12 points)

MEMO

From: CIO

COST OF CELL PHONES

In order to choose a plan to buy, there are a number of factors that need to be considered other than the best price. One of the factors is the unlimited plan. The different companies have different unlimited plan features. For example, Verizon has Beyond Unlimited plan which is best when it comes to coverage. T-Mobile on the other hand has ONE Plus unlimited plan which is best for hotspot as well as international features while AT&T has Unlimited &More, which is best for streaming perks. Overall, the favorite in this case is T-Mobile ONE Plus. This is because it includes such key extras as a 20GB hotspot as well as HD streaming. The model that was developed helps in comparing the cost of each of the companies for each GB used. The slope of the slope will be used to tell which of the company is best financially, the one with lowest slope is best financially. It would be best to purchase a family plan and then create a hotspot so that all the members get internet access. T-Mobile ONE Plus is the best company for this due to the 20GB hotspot, which is higher than the 15GB for Verizon and AT&T. Comparing the cost, it would be financially efficient to purchase an unlimited data plan. The company that is best for this is T-Mobile due to the extra 20GB that it comes along.
