Part 1

Introduction of the Media

The article “Ethan Hawke: 'It’s just a petrifying time to speak about male sexuality” by Alex Preston is focused on the concept of sexual scripts. It entails the expectations of how a person is supposed to act sexually. It enables people to determine sexual situations and understand sensations and emotions in regards to its sexual meaning (Preston, 2020). A person may adjust his/her scrip, but the foundation will remain. Sexuality is regulated by society.

Summary of the Media

The media is focused on an interview with Ethan Hawk, a novelist, actor, and film director. He states that a person’s sexual identity, the relationship that they have through this identity, with oneself and others, is what defines a person (Preston, 2020). On that note, it should not be hard or shaming for a person to talk about their sexuality. Essentially, he claims that men have been scripted to shy away about topic that pertain their sexuality.

The Impact on College Students

The topic impacts college students since it illustrates how they came to the sexual group. In the modern world, people are grouped as heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual. Homosexuals face a hard time and go through certain stages before affirming their gay identity. The two vital factors in determining sexual orientation are the gender of a person’s partner and the label one attaches to oneself.

How The Topic Relates to Human Sexuality

The first concept pertains to socialization , particularly, ways through which people learn about their sexuality. First is the parental influence where a child learns much about sexuality from the parents. The learning is initiated by the urge of the parents to teach children about sexual behavior and observation of the parents. Second is through peer influence. Teenagers tend to pass a vast amount of information about sex between each other. They usually place pressure on each other to perform traditional gender roles. The last influence is the media. The different forms of mass media have a profound effect on a person’s sexual ideology and may determine sexual behaviors and choices.

The second concept is gender roles . The sexual scripts incline men and women to perform their various roles in society. Through the sexual script, people learn how they are supposed to act and behave according to their gender. While gender roles have become more fluid in recent decades, there are still stereotypical male and female roles.

Outside Source

Timmermans and Van den Bulck reinforce the discussion in the media in their journal article. They state that the traditional male script features aspects like sexual competence, sexual desire, and fertility (Timmermans & Van den Bulck, 2018). Inversely, the woman script includes a focus on feelings and love and waiting for the man to trigger the sexuality. In the modern world, sexual expressions are seen positively, and sexual acts are a mutual exchange of pleasure in the erotic sense (Timmermans & Van den Bulck, 2018). Sexuality engages both partners equally, and they share responsibility. Legitimate sexual acts are not confined to sexual intercourse as they include oral-genital sex and masturbation. Moreover, a sexual act may be activated by any partner. Non- marital sex is accepted with the context of a relationship, and same-sex couples are enjoying increased freedom.

Part 2

The article discusses a common yet largely ignored topic. Indeed, I have never through about the concept of sexual scripts. Essentially, I have been scripted to act in a certain way due to my gender. Moreover, although I am familiar with my sexuality, I am afraid to talk about it since I have been socialized that way. On that note, it will be interesting to evaluate how a person’s social setting and environment affects their sexual script.
