I have an internal locus of control. I believe that I am responsible for my successes and failures. As such, I do not blame anyone when things do not go my way. Whenever my actions result in undesirable consequences, I always ask myself what I would have done differently. While psychologists insist that an internal locus is an inborn personality component, I believe that my childhood experiences and my support systems are contributory factors to my internal locus (Cobb-Clarka, Kassen, & Sinning, 2016) . I grew up around positive people. I was also encouraged by my parents to take responsibility for my actions. My parents were strict disciplinarians who would not let an unbecoming behavior go unpunished. As such, they helped me to understand that while they were my parents and they were responsible for my wellbeing, I was personally responsible for my life’s successes and failures. I had my fair share of mistakes while growing up but I learnt from them and I never repeated the same mistakes.

Having an internal locus or external locus depends on one’s upbringing and belief system. However, I know for a fact that individuals with an internal locus of control are more likely to take responsibility for their mistakes and to make life changing decisions without hesitating as compared to individuals with an external locus of control (Armstrong & Tudor, 2019) . For this reason, individuals with an internal locus are better off than the ones with an external locus. Instead of blaming other people for their failures or expecting fate to take its course, people with an internal locus shape their life’s trajectory. They might not be in control of every factor that makes them successful but they try as much as they can to influence the outcome of their decisions.
