Spreadsheets such as Excel and IDEA are vital tools for collecting and tracking data. Among the strengths of spreadsheets is the ability to collect and organize data. A user can conveniently enter raw data in rows and columns and sort it by the information type. More importantly, spreadsheets allow users to create tables and pie charts which enhance viewing and interpretation of data. Another strength of the spreadsheets is the availability of mathematical functions and formula that reduces the chances of recalculating figures. Besides, spreadsheets have file sharing option that allows different users to access data and update the available information. However, spreadsheets have limitations. For instance, they lack vital security features, and as a result, the data stored in them is at risk of corruption or manipulation from hackers. Another limitation of the spreadsheets is that they are subject to user bias. An individual may unintentionally leave out vital information, and the output of the data analysis will rely on the content entered into a spreadsheet.
As an auditor, when determining the right spreadsheet for a given task, one has to consider different factors. For example, one has to identify the resources of an organization. Some firms may need spreadsheets that can be used both online and offline. An auditor also needs to the spreadsheet’s ability to conduct data analysis and statistical operations. Besides, an auditor has to consider the error checking capability of a spreadsheet to avoid mistakes in data analysis processes. Another consideration is the effectiveness of a spreadsheet in graphing and presenting data.

Google Sheets can serve as an alternative to Microsoft Excel. When selling this idea to people who do not know about Google Sheets, I will disprove the common misconception that the spreadsheet has limited function. I will advise them that Google Sheets have a limit of 5 million cells in every workbook (Thelin, n.d.). Besides, Google Sheets have an additional function that enables the user to check the progress of the data analysis while working on another assignment. Apart from functionality, users are assured of the security of their data in Google servers.
