Statement
After looking through the AddHealth Database, I have decided that I am predominantly interested in studying stress, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents. I want to determine common stressors facing the adolescents in the United States, to explore their traumatic experiences, and determine the prevalence of PTSD among adolescents in the United States. It strikes me that friends and acquaintances that I have known through the years develop common stressors during adolescence. I want to see if there is an association between stress, trauma, and PTSD, and adolescence because it affects adolescents in myriad ways. More specifically, I want to see the prevalence of PTSD in adolescent males and females and across ethnic groups. If my topic is too vague, I would like to bring in the issue of substance use disorder. I will be interested to see if there is any correlation between PTSD and substance use disorder among patients.
Potential Variables
After going over the list of available variables, I decided to include gender (variable name = bio_sex, codebook name = H123A), language (variable name = English, codebook name = H4OD2A, variable name = Spanish, codebook name = H4OD2B, variable name = Chinese, codebook name = H4OD2C, variable name = another European language, codebook name = H4OD2D, variable name an other Asian language, codebook name = H4OD2E, and variable name = an other language, codebook name = H4OD2F), variable name =smoking, codebook name = H4TO1), and variable name = PTSD, codebook name =H4ID5I. Because the rate of prevalence tends to vary across gender and ethnicity, I might discover the rate of prevalence of PTSD in males and females and across ethnic groups. There is a wide range of ways to determine the prevalence of PTSD among adolescents. Since the dataset contains both gender and ethnicity, I will use both datasets to determine the prevalence of PSTD among adolescents in the United States.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
(H123A) bio-sex: categorical variable; possible values are male and female (0 for male and 1 for female)
(H4ID5I) PTSD; quantitative discrete variable; possible values are 0 and 1.
(H4OD2A ; H4OD2B ; H4OD2C ; H4OD2D ; H4OD2E) language (ethnicity); categorical variable; possible values (0 for English, 1 for Spanish, 2 for Chinese, 3 for Asian, and etc).
