The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) is one of the major transportation agencies in the United States that impact significantly on the policies governing various public transportation systems as well as the entire nation’s transportation and infrastructure operation systems. The department of transportation regulates both planning and coordination of federal transportation projects in different ways (Assessment, 2012). Some of its major impacts on the transportation industry are briefly explained below:

The US Department of transportation agency is responsible for regulating major transportation modes in the country. The department achieves this regulatory function by setting up safety regulatory rules which all the commercial and personal vehicle operators are expected to strictly adhere to. Accordinsg to Coad, De Haan & Woersdorfer (2009), the department is also tasked with a role of setting up policies that guide the nature of vehicles produced in automotive industries as well as customer’s use of such vehicles. This function contributes to the safety of citizens and environment, which ultimately ensures safety in the industry of transportation.

The US DOT agency also sets the minimum qualifications and standards of the commercial motor vehicle drivers. The core policies stipulated by the department ensure that the drivers who are employed satisfactorily accomplish the basic qualifications required to operate commercial motor vehicles. This helps to minimize reckless driving which consequently reduces the prevalence of all forms of road misconduct that are likely to result into road accidents (Jovanis, Wu & Chen, 2011). For instance, the department stipulates hours of service for every driver, a strategy aimed at reducing incidences of fatigue which are likely to cause road confusion and accidents.

In a nutshell the US Department of transportation is one of the major transportation regulatory agencies that play and imperative role in ensuring efficiency of transportation and motor industry. The department majorly accomplishes its tasks through stipulation and strict enforcement of its sound policies.
