In a National Public Radio article entitled "Micheal Cohen Sentenced To 3 Years in Prison following plea that Implicated Trump, " Lucas and Ewing write about the bitter consequences Donald Trump’s former lawyer faces after he broke a number of his professional ethics as well as laws of the land. According to the article, Cohen got three years in prison as well as three supervised years after release. Besides, Cohen also faces a half million dollars forfeiture, over a million dollar restitution and fines totaling to a hundred million dollars. Cohen was charged after admitting that he was involved in paying off women Trump had been sexually involved with so that they would keep quiet during the 2016 presidential campaigns. He also revealed that he was aided with Trump's contact with powerful Russians during the campaigns. Additionally, the former lawyer pleaded guilty of tax evasion and bank fraud. While Donald Trump denied his accusation, Cohen said he does not regret his admission to the dirty works he did for Trump since he feels that the truth set him free.
Cohen got the punishment he disserved for violating his professional ethics as well as federal laws. Indeed, Cohen broke the attorney-client confidentiality code by exposing the information Donald Trump had shared with him when he was his lawyer. The former attorney also violated the MRPC rule, which restricts lawyers from offering financial assistance to their clients in matters with litigation connection (Schultz, 2018). The lawyer was also incompetent for not providing his client with the right legal advice but backing him up in his alleged violations of the law. Cohen is also guilty of malpractice because he acted in a way that undermined the duties of Trump. I, therefore, agree with the article which paints Cohen as a deceptionist who acted under personal greed and ambitions and a lawyer who at some point lost his moral compass.
