On June 26 last year, the US Supreme Court legalized gay marriage and made it a law in all fifty US states. Gay rights and marriage are one of the most controversial topics not only in the US but the whole world. While some support gay rights and argue that banning gay marriages is unconstitutional and discriminatory and support that the gay couple should have equal rights as a couple of different sex some oppose gay rights due to religious and cultural values and practices. Apparently, I believe that gay marriages are not by nature and therefore they should be abolished.
The decision to abolish gay marriage has been significantly shaped by my religious knowledge and culture. Culture and one's experience greatly influence how people think and arrive at a decision (Sen, 2011). Firstly, marriage is meant for procreation which should be natural, ironically, the gay couple cannot conceive a child and the only way they can have a child is through adopting. Secondly, marriage is between two people of opposite sex; therefore same-sex marriages such as gays ‘marriages are not a marriage when viewed from a Christian perspective.

Another factor that hindered critical thinking in the debate is the resistance to change (Sen, 2011). Since the creation of man, marriages are made up of man and a woman and accepting change and the fact that people of the same sex can marry is difficult. Traditionally, marriages are meant for people of the opposite sex and modify the perspective of marriage is still challenging. In this case, effective critical thinking has been hindered by resistance to change, and that is failing to embrace change in marriage structure.
Lastly, the egocentric mind which is thinking characterized by personal interests (Sen, 2011) shaped the decision reached on gay marriages. Whereby as an individual I would wish to have what most people believe is a complete family of a man and a woman. Conformity to my peers to belong also influenced the critical thinking process. In this case, peer point of view played a significant role in shaping my thinking and final decision.
