A mission statement is a formal summary of the objectives and values of a company or an individual. The sole purpose of a mission statement is to serve as a firm’s agenda as it outlines what the main goal of the organization is (Peak, 2016). The three mission statements in Criminal Justice chosen include The State Department, The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). All of these units fall under law enforcement agencies, and their main aim is to prevent crime and protect people. They all come before correctional agencies and the court but directly into these organizations. Despite having many similarities, they are all different in purpose and scope.

The State Department aims at creating a more secure, democratic, and prosperous world for the benefit of the American people and the international community. The FBI aims at upholding the law through investigation of violations of federal statutes to protect the United States from hostile intelligence efforts. Lastly, the DEA, enforces laws and regulations on controlled substance in the United States, bringing to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States any individual or firm that is involved in the growing, manufacture a or distribution of control substances, whether for use in the country or for illegal trafficking. The efforts of the DEA are directed towards the reduction of availability of illicit controlled substances within the United States markets and in the international markets.

The United States government charges the FBI with the enforcement of more than 200 categories of federal laws (FBI, 2016). The DEA, on the other hand, operates as a single-mission agency charged with the enforcing ad upholding drug laws. In cases where jurisdictions overlap, both units work closely with each other. The States department is more bureaucratic and functions on a grander scale than the FBI and DEA. It is also not focused on one specific activity but rather on a diplomatic solution. Despite this, it is still characterized as law enforcement services it aims at protecting global by creating measures on issues that threaten the security and safety of American citizens all over the world.

Peace Corps Mission Statement

The Peace Corps represents a service opportunity for changemakers to engage themselves in a community abroad while working closely with local leaders to tackle challenges that face our generation. The Peace Corps aims to achieve this through: Helping people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained volunteers, help create a better understanding of Americas on the part of the people served and help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans (Peace Corps, 2019). The similarity between the Peace Corps mission with the Criminal justice mission statements is that they both focus on helping people. The Peace Corp Mission is also similar to the State Department mission in that they are both global. The primary purpose of the criminal justice mission statement is to ensure that all citizens are protected from criminal actives and that the laws of the United States are upheld at all times. This creates the difference between the two as the Peace Corps mission aims at promoting global citizenship and altruism.

I have not taken many pledges in my life seeing that the only one I can recall is the Girl’s Scout Law. As kids, we used to recite this pledge at the beginning and the end of all functions/Meetings. The pledge stated, “On my Honor, I will try to serve God and my country, to help people at all times and to live by the Girl Scout Law.” As I grew up, the pledge faded from my thoughts, and I have not thought about it. This pledge shares similarity with the Peace Corps pledge which encourages people to build their communities, learn tolerance and at all times help people. I, however, did not understand the magnitude of the words I often recited during the pledge seeing that I was a child, but now I know the weight behind the Girl’s scout pledge. Similar to the military pledge, both the girls and boy’s scouts’ law express an element of service to the country. This could be the reason why most people who were in girls or boy scouts as children, end up serving in the military when they grow up or become service servants.

The mission statement of any firm is essential as it helps direct organizational strategies. It provides the goals and purpose which are necessary elements for any strategy. According to Ahmed (2011), the statement also helps outline the primary audience of the business and what the audience find important. The field of criminal justice consists of numerous units that serve different purposes for the government and the people of the United States all over the world. Each group has its mission statement, and by reading through this, one can easily understand the purpose and goal of the unit. Mission statements may seem short, but they summarize the essential details regarding any firm.
