In the case of petty theft, such as a twenty-dollar note taken from my locker, the likelihood of making reports to the police would be low. I would also not report a domestic theft to the police. Instead, I would make the choice to try and find a solution for the crime myself without the involvement of the police. This is because of the reported cases where the police made ethically inappropriate changes to the complaints of crimes. Most police officers face pressure from their departments to keep crime statistics low. This usually results in many crime complaints not being recorded. Due to this, I believe that if I made crime reports on matters such as petty theft and domestic theft, my complaint would not be recorded but would instead be ignored.
Another reason why I would prefer not to make a report to the police is due to the cases of downgrading crimes by the policers. In the downgrading of crimes, most police officers make classifications of significant crimes into lesser crimes. For example, a crime that exists in the felony category would be classified as a misdemeanor. In this case, reporting a petty theft or a domestic theft would mean that the crime reported would not be provided with the required attention. In this way, the police officers would simply fail to record the crimes. This can all be attributed to the increasing pressure that police departments face concerning the decrease in crime statistics. As there would be no attention paid to the crime reported, I would rather attempt to solve or find solutions to the crime on my own.
