Abstract

Policing brings about peace and maintenance of law and order. Therefore, in order to get the best services, it is necessary that the recruitment of police be based on various aspects such as an individual’s skill, knowledge and abilities. This would enhance service delivery and would bring efficiency in the police. This paper outlines some of these requirements that would enhance the policing service.

Introduction

Policing is an important aspect in the society as it maintains law and order. This has been in existence for a very long time and various techniques were employed to achieve policing objectives. Conventionally, villages used chiefs and organized groups in maintain law and order (President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, 2015). Today, there are formal policing units that have taken up this role and are divided into various groups such as the administrative police and the military. To attain the best policing services, it is vital that knowledge, skill and the abilities of the officers be considered.

Knowledge 

Being educated would help an officer to understand the diverse situations he/she would come across and would use the necessary information to handle a matter.

A College Degree .

A recruited officer ought to have a college degree as a minimum requirement.

why it is critical. This helps to better understand the various challenges and situations encountered by the police.

The well-educated police officer has an established capacity to evaluate the value, the action, and the merit of the human action (President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, 2015). It also helps the police to understand his/her partner’s strengths and weaknesses hence division of labor and implementation of tasks is made easier (Holgersson, 2006).

Skills 

Being adept helps in the solving of cases and enhancement of peace co-existence, not only between the police and the community, but also among the police officers too.

Emotional Stability .

An officer ought to be able to handle the stress that is associated with the policing work such as emergencies, verbal abuse and violence (The President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, 1967).

why it is critical . This would help the police to carry out his/her duties diligently and without any prejudice.

how it facilitates better policing . It brings about sanity and rational thinking when it comes to the handling of criminals and other related cases.

Abilities 

Police work is quite tasking. The fact that a police deals with diverse scenarios which may be quite demanding requires that him/her should possess unique abilities in order to carry out the assigned duties effectively and efficiently.

Physically Fit .

A police ought to be courageous, be agile and have stamina.

why it is critical . Such attributes play a significant role when it comes to saving other people’s lives as well as protecting the officer from any harm.

how it facilitates better policing . A police is able to handle the aggressive nature of this work and manage tough situations without being overwhelmed.

Conclusion 

It is apparent that skill, ability and knowledge are vital aspects in the policing unit. Therefore, recruitment of police officers need to factor in these aspects in order to have effective and efficient delivery of services.
