Slide 1: Egoism and its Manifestation

Egoism is the valuing of everything with one’s interests as the central reference point. Egoism manifests in several ways: behavior, communication, and the way people prioritize items or tasks, and the relationships they choose to form or avoid. Egoism positively contributes to personal improvement through people making decisions that better them. The individuals make decisions make choices that benefit them. For instance, when deciding on abusing drugs or using alcohol-based on peer external factors or pressure, the individuals would think of their well-being instead of external influence. Similarly, egoism enhances self-awareness, which boosts people’s self-worth as people do things for themselves rather than pleasing others; for instance, employees would do their work for their gain rather than please their supervisors. They do the work only to fulfill their job agreements and get paid for their work rather than to please their boss. However, there are cases when egoism a sense of conceit and selfishness that affects people’s thoughts, behaviors, and actions. Egoistic people behave in ways that reflect a level of superiority and self-importance without considering how the behavior affects other people, but priority is how their behaviors favor them.

Slide 2: Broadscope of Egoism

Egoism could be ethical, psychological, or rational, referred to as descriptive, normative, and conditional egoism. There are cases when people exhibit egoistic behaviors, either deliberately or unintentionally. Intentional egoists intentionally act in self-interest behavior. In some cases, people unintentionally engage in egoistic behaviors when pursuing their goals. Both deliberate and unintentional egoism have positive and negative outcomes. For instance, there is nothing wrong when an individual acts in self-beneficial behavior. However, if such behavior benefits the doer at the expense of other people, it leads to adverse outcomes. Egoism could depict self-ism as the egoist acts if the actions had some benefits for them. It is a commonplace happening to go about one’s daily routine without any conscious awareness of egoism. Egoism is reflected in people’s attitudes toward other people and tasks. People engage in self-interest behaviors with the ultimate aim of their welfare while, in other cases, do things if and only if those actions optimize their self-interest. Groups could behave egoistically by agreeing to only work on activities that benefit them as a group. They engage in collective egoism that is only beneficial to the team, becoming a critical factor in their decision-making. Egoistic behaviors affect organizational health in efficiency, decision-making, team performance, and attitudes in an organization both positively and negatively (Köllen, 2016, p.221).

Slide 3: Egoism v. Non-egoism and Impact on Health of Organizations

Egoism promotes identity in the community as individuals focus on the impact their identity has on their success. The members of the community concentrate on how other people’s differences can help them further their self-interests. Egoism promotes sustainability in households through continual reflection on personal identity. In the process, egoism ensures that every household works to meet their own needs before considering the outside world's needs. Egoistic individuals work to meet their interests over caring for the needs of other people. It does not always guarantee the egoists will have comfortable lifestyles but focus more on having their basic needs such as food, water, healthcare, and clothing. Egoism eliminates objectivity by the egoists, not following the societal emphasis on care for others. The decision and actions of egoism are driven by personnel interests’ thus eliminating objectivity. Non-egoism encourages compassion, promotion of customer-centrism, and objective decision-making that considers its interests, clients, and community. However, there are cases of non-egoism limiting the achievement of personal goals and success by focusing on the needs of others and failing to cater to individual needs or goals.

Slide 4: Pros of Egoism on the Heath of an Organization

Egoism maximizes a business's chances to succeed financially since it focuses only on taking care of its goals while neglecting everyone else’s. In such environments, the firms focus on executing their tasks that enhance their chances of financial success. Egoism can help businesses determine their identity easily and who they are. Egoism leads to companies focusing more time on them, helping them understand their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats easily. Once employees and firms realize that they need to focus on their interests alone, they often seek to learn and do activities that help promote those interests and achieve their objectives. Egoism thus leads to more independence that is good for successful business leadership and boosts employee confidence in their specialty areas.

Slide 5: Cons of Egoism on the Health of an Organization

Egoism is characteristics of self-centeredness and limited consideration of other people’s input. When firms are going global in the current corporate age, there is a need to embrace diversity. However, egoism's selfish nature of egoism is counterproductive to diversity as employees have an individual sense of self-importance that works against embracing diversity. Equally, egoist firms tend to neglect corporate social responsibility and instead focus on activities that directly contribute to their port making. Egoism thus leads them to avoid or limit the number of their CSR initiatives. An egoistic business environment promotes other people's notion of being more important than others that negatively affect equity and equality (Bussmann & Niemeczek, 2019) . Moreover, firms with egoistic employees tend to be void of justice and engage in unhealthy competition that is not good for their holistic success. It negatively weighs on the reputation of the company.

Examples

Egoism could lead navy personnel to engage in self-sacrifice behavior to save a colleague or risky behavior for attracting praise or recognition. For instance, a navy officer or soldier engages in self-sacrifice behavior such as diving in a sea section that is heavily infested with sharks or dangerous sea animals to help out a colleague. The soldier commits their life to save their colleague because of the thought of not living with it if they did nothing. Additionally, another soldier would engage in such self-sacrifice activities to carry the day as the hero.

Another example is when a soldier disobeys a command to destroy certain enemy assets just because they have personal or self-interest in such property. The soldier acts defiantly with egoism as his/her underlying motivation because of seeking to achieve what primarily benefits them or what seems to benefit them most rather than what is good for the others or the general populace.
