Describe if Hughes is a transformational or pseudo-transformational leader.

Hughes is a Pseudo-transformational leader. Despite having creative ideas and the charisma to implement them leading to the turnaround of the school and its successful development financially, he is mostly only interested in himself. Hughes completely ignores the social aspect and culture of the school in an attempt to run the school as a business and make more financial gains. Also, despite the improvement of the school financially and its attraction of local investors, Hughes withholds increasing the salary of the faculty, despite already being awarded an increment by the board on account of the school turnaround. This indicates that Hughes is only interested in himself and not the school and what it represents or the faculty workers.

Was it ethical to downplay the college’s mission in order to attract more students?

It was unethical to downplay the college's mission in the pursuit to attract more students. The founders of the school developed it on the foundation of values and promoting social service and change. This represents the most significant aspect of the schools' mission and regardless of the number of students taught at the school, they should be prepared to be servants and advocates of social change in the world. This is what was represented by the schools' mission and changing it means taking away the school's purpose which can be considered unethical.

Explain if colleges operate more like businesses.

Colleges operate more like businesses in contemporary society given the societal pressures and lack of funds. However, they should not operate like businesses because then, the purpose and function of the college may be lost. According to Roy (2011), a wide range of colleges operate like businesses gaining significantly from the tuition money to prosper, however, this results in their neglecting of their responsibilities. Setting goals and objectives from a business and financial perspective pushes the administration to complacency thereby leading to the disregarding of the education aspect which is their main purpose.
