The restorative justice model has been defined as a model that is concerned about the remedy of the harm caused by a criminal when a crime or tort is committed. Restorative justice is based upon principles that delineate to the fact that when crimes are committed, harm is caused not only to the victim of the crime but also to the community as a whole. This therefore lays emphasis on the importance of addressing the harm that has been inflicted by the offender in totality. This is addressed by holding the perpetrator of a crime directly accountable for the crime together with addressing the impact of the crime that has been committed. Furthermore, the restorative justice system provides an opportunity or the offender to amicably come to a resolution with the victims of the crime therefore instilling respect, compassion and inclusivity in the rehabilitation process.
Given the fact that the suspected car thief was found culpable of the crimes he was accused of, it is only reasonable for the law enforcement and justice system to establish the level of harm caused by the actions of the suspect (Inside Edition, 2016). In addition to the tainted name of the police department, the man was found culpable for possession of a firearm illegally together with dangerous driving which contributed to the endangerment of his life and those of other road users (Inside Edition, 2016). To this extent therefore, the law enforcement officer whose car was stolen together with the public prosecutor will have to meet with the suspect to aid him to comprehend the implications of his actions in term of the harm caused (Inside Edition, 2016). The parties must then discuss how best the suspected offender can remedy the damage caused by stealing the police car and engaging in dangerous driving behavior by using a phone to record the ordeal, therefore further tainting the name of the law enforcement (Inside Edition, 2016).
