Summary of the Article

On his article, Economic Inequality: It’s Far Worse than You Think, Nickolas Fitz writes on social mobility and economic inequality. Fitz shows a comparison between belief, reality, and ideal and states that our society has become unequal. Compared to other advanced nations, the gap between the rich and the poor is bigger in the United States, but most people are unconcerned. Majority of American citizens overstate the amount of upward social mobility. They believe that if an individual works hard, he/she will make lots of money and join the elite group. This is a central part of the American Dream. In reality, it is quite difficult to achieve this dream because America has an unfair economic system and considerably less social mobility than Europe and Canada. Fitz writes, “b y overemphasizing individual mobility, we ignore important social determinants of success like family inheritance, social connections, and structural discrimination” (Fitz, 2015). Thus, Americans ought to wake up and make real changes to shift the economic system to equilibrium since it unfairly favours the rich.

Evaluation of the Article

I total agree with the points Fitz has outlined in his article on social mobility and economic inequality. This is because the big gainers in America’s new prosperity are the rich making the gap between the rich and the poor grow bigger. Numerous studies have proven this, for instance, Fingerhut states that 65% of American citizens believe the economic system unfairly favors powerful interests (2016). Fitz conducted several research on this issue to show that the U.S economic system is unfair. The consistency and relevancy of the findings from the research make me agree with his points of views. However, the sample population used in the research is very small. Fitz has to use a larger sample population in order to obtain results that are more meaningful.
