The article Rio 2016: The Challenges of Hosting the Olympic Games depicts several problems that Rio de Janeiro faced before hosting the 2016 Olympics. According to the article, Rio de Janeiro faced too many issues that had to address before the Olympics were held, this problem includes polluted water and Traffic in the city. The underlying cause of polluted water is the release of raw sewage into Guanabara Bay waters. Guanabara Bay waters were the spot that was selected by the Olympics committee to host all water sports competition, but the place is much polluted. Also, the problem of traffic congestion was a concern before hosting the Olympics. Similar to another major town, Rio de Janeiro faced a problem with Traffic congestion. According to the article, Rio de Janeiro has two subways which serve six and a half million inhabitants making the traffic of the town congested. Barra da Tijuca which is one of the main hubs of Olympic has no subway station close to it even remotely close. Therefore, with a normal Jams in the city makes people feel traffic jams as a major issue.

Olympics is the most affected events since it was designated to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro. Also, athletes will be most affected by the raw sewage since it might make them sick. Similarly, athletes will be affected by heavy traffic found in Rio de Janeiro; they will not be able to commute to other regions and arrive on time. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro and the government of Brazil are to be blamed for the two problems that were faced because the problem could have been addressed way back. The solution to water pollution includes reducing raw sewage being realized in Guanabara Bay by 80 percent it will help reduce water pollution immensely. Similarly, the problem of heavy traffic was addressed by building a 3rd subway line which connected to the center of the city with Barra da Tijuca. The cities in the periphery and developing nations should not be allowed to host big events such as the Olympics because they lack adequate infrastructures which will sustain such a big event.
