Leadership is the ability or capacity to influence other people, change, and demonstrate control over their conduct in a particular setting or context. An individual can influence and provide direction in an organization. It entails setting a clear vision and sharing it with other people to willingly share and offer the information and methods to achieve it. Leadership is essential in any organization. Without proper and effective leadership, it is difficult for an organization to become successful and realize its vision. Therefore, effective leadership is a crucial factor in an organization’s success and employee performance. Throughout the leadership topic, I have learned multiple critical things that will significantly impact my leadership in the future. This paper will share three critical points that will affect me as a leader in the days to come. These points are the importance of effective communication for successful leadership. Leadership style has a significant impact on employee motivation, and a leader should be a role model, leading by example by doing what he/she expects others to do.
A great leader is an effective communicator. A leader should have outstanding communication skills to provide direction, motivate, and mentor other people. A leader should communicate an organization’s values to employees clearly and understandably (Peach, 2017). They are different from good talkers because that they possess the knowledge and demonstrate confidence in their communication. Confidence is an essential quality in a leader, and it is needed for the leader to gain trust and influence followers. Besides, they can show passion and ambition when passing their ideas or suggestions across. Knowledge of the need for effective communication and how it is achieved will help establish a connection with the people I will be leading. According to Peach (2017), a leader who cannot connect with the followers cannot achieve the purpose of communication. For a leader to be effective, he/she should be an active listener, a good observer to analyze behaviors and attitudes among followers, and have the ability to encourage and motivate other people through communication.

There are different types of leadership, including transactional, transformational, and authoritarian leadership, among others. Each leadership style has its own impact on employee motivation. For example, research indicates that transactional leaders do not motivate or inspire employees to grow in their careers. They do not have regular contact with employees unless an issue or problem at the workplace occurs (Iqbal, 2015). A transactional leader requires the same procedures and processes to be always followed without a flaw when work is being done. In this style, employees receive rewards and punishments. Since rewards do not lead to lasting motivation, transactional leadership will not be used as the dominant leadership style in my future leadership role. However, it will be helpful in some cases, such as when there is a need for urgent decisions or work.
Transactional leadership is considered effective in motivating employees, and it can help employees grow in their careers as the organization achieves success, too (Iqbal, 2015). A transformational leader should inspire, challenge, show charisma and develop the workers’ capability. As a consequence, employees have the willingness to work with the leader. This leadership style will be adopted as the principal leadership style in future work. A leader should lead by example. If a leader wants employees to be committed to their work, he/she has to show commitment first. As a leader, I will ensure that I walk my talk. Employees are motivated when their leader behaves in the same way that he/she expects them to act. Therefore, it is crucial for a leader to model for his/her followers what is expected of them.
