There are various categories of law in the US. They include criminal law, civil law, the US military law, and Native American law ( Reinach & Crosby, 2012) . However, the two most prominent ones are civil and criminal laws. These laws have specific laws which are under them.

Criminal law

One of the laws which are found under the criminal law is assault law. Under this law, assault is committed when an individual physically strikes or tries to physically strike another person or acts towards another individual in a threatening manner ( Ashworth & Horder, 2013) . The aim of the assault law is to discourage people from showing threatening or aggressive behavior towards others even in the absence of physical contact. In most US states, assault, as a crime, is punishable by fines or a jail term of up to one year.

Civil law

One of the specific laws under civil law is contract law. Contract law governs written and oral agreements which are associated with exchange of properties, money, and goods and services. This law addresses issues such as limitation of actions, the nature of contractual obligations, privity of contract, freedom of contract, and termination of contract ( Reinach & Crosby, 2012) . It also covers agency relationships, contracts of employment, and commercial paper. The contract law recognizes the binding powers of a contract and spells out the consequences of breaking the contract or failure to meet the requirements of a contract. It also spells out the circumstances which are needed for one to enter a contract. For example, this law states that one must have attained the legal age of 18 years for them to enter into a contract. This implies that a contract which involves a minor is null.
