Intermodal transportation is the movement of freight using multiple methods and modes, i.e. air, land (rail and road) and maritime. The popularity of this combination method has recently increased with benefits owed to environmental conservation and cargo transport efficiency and reliability. Therefore, if people adopted intermodal freight transportation then, there would be increased positive environmental impacts facilitated by reduced fuel consumption and vehicle traffic. With the increased global technology, international trade, and soaring fuel prices, it is a collective obligation to the society to make sure that they adopt positive and efficient methods which facilitate environmental management while limiting destruction caused by land clearing to make space for new transport channels such as roads.

High consumption of fossil fuels, i.e. diesel is highly attributed to air and water pollution. Therefore with the advancing technology which includes electric rails and modernization of cargo handling, people be encouraged to utilize the available resources while striving to prevent pollution which has adverse effects on their health and climate. Continuous use of one mode of transport cause unintended traffics and noise pollution which also facilitates the expansion of roads and rails to accommodate the increased number of vehicles. However, the ultimate bearer of environmental consequences are the same people involved in facilitating transportation.

Intermodal transportation is also beneficial to the community as it provides access to international and regional trade through efficient and timely channels. Cargo handling is greatly reduced therefore enhancing the security of the goods being transported. Furthermore, with the increasing digitization of services such as e-commerce and tracking devices/applications development, containers and goods are transported in a reliable and quality mode which is cost effective.
