The NCO common Core Competencies of operations (NCOCCC) serve among other functions to develop a subtly defined and known leadership and chain of command within the military. Leadership and communication are among the six core competencies described by the NCOCCC (Army.mil, 2021) and are crucial success factors to any mission necessitating the need for Mission Command in fighting formations and training management.

The army needs and relies on personnel who have the capability of making intent-driven decisions to effectively carry out daily operations and execute mission command (Galluzo, 2019). As such, leaders not only need to show understanding of effective leadership requirements such as problem-solving and critical thinking (Harvey, 2005), they also need to be able to follow command and base actions and decisions on adequate communication down the chain of command.

Communication and leadership are critical in any command to ensure shared understanding which impacts the effective implementation of any mission at hand. The lack of Mission Command in the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) leads to a lack of shared understanding between the two battalions which prevented the commander from seizing the initiative.

The lack of an effective Mission Command (MC) prevented effective communication between the two company commanders and the Battalion commanders. It was necessary to regroup and receive communication and command on whether to seize and exploit the initiative to provide assessment and dissemination of gathered intelligence. The regrouping not only disrupted the progress made by the two companies in the Battalion but also gave the enemy time to consolidate and reorganize its forces to prevent exploitation of the initiative.

The lack of a Mission command compromised both the Leadership and Communication competency highlighted by the NCOCCC thereby leading to failure in the mission. The Leadership Imperative as such explicitly highlights the significance and necessity for effective leadership and communication strategy in an effective Mission Command for ultimate mission success.
