The article, “What “Retirement’ Means Now,” provides information regarding the issues that people experience as they approach retirement. In an attempt to show the seriousness of the issue, the author of the article begins by quoting the expectations of people likely to retire by the end of the year 2028. The United States is expecting to have approximately 43 million people in the country to be 55 years and above (Zimmerman, 2019). As the retirement population increases, people have started shifting from one job position to another thus playing an active role in the economy even after they are alleged to retire. The central idea is that the traditional description of retirement has changed as elderly people are becoming more integrated in the economy compared to previous generations. Traditionally, it was common for people expecting retirement to record hobbies, freedom, and enjoyment as their focus for the retirement approach. However, retirement has taken a different path with the majority of people, including work as part of their plan after retirement from official duties. For example, elderly people may get change from fulltime to part time or engage in business activities. The reasons for this decision vary from one individual to the other, with 80 % of the population quoting financial goals while only 70% associate the shift in job to health requirements.

The article applies a statistical description by using percentages and measures of dispersion to present information regarding people’s perception of the use of data in society. For example, the article is based on data obtained from a sample population of workers in the United States. The sample population consisted of approximately 5168 workers across different generations. In an attempt to provide meaningful information, percentage statistical data was applied to show the portion of people from the sample population and their perception of retirement. For example, the article reports that 86% of the people who participated in the online survey and identified that they would like to enjoy freedom, leisure, and engagement in business activities. The changes in perception of retirement in the modern world require statistical data to understand the varying reasons for a change in retirement perception (Holcomb, 2016). As people become old in society, they have different reasons to live. The use of percentage to express statistical data indicates that financial goals are the leading causes for a desire for jobs after retirement, while health conditions are the second reason for involvement in business activities and part time jobs after retirement.

Lack of corporate retirement benefits is also considered to be a reason as to why people focus on identifies different strategies that they can use as an alternative source of income. Inadequate corporate benefits compel companies to increase the age at which they will be willing to retire. Therefore, descriptive statistics give the frequency at which people wish to withdraw after or before the age of 65 years. For example, 70% of the participants in the research indicate that they want to retire after the age of 65 because they fear their financial liability in the future (Zimmerman, 2019). The information given in percentage information makes it easy to understand the seriousness that people usually have regarding leaving jobs or participation in the work environment at old age.

The article is informative regarding real world experiences, especially for challenges facing people in the work environment and future expectations for participating in areas of work. For example, financial requirements and increased desire for people to live a comfortable life have increased the rate of demand for money. In effect, balancing work, home activities has become a challenge among many people in society. People work extra time and compensate for leisure time with paid overtime. The same problem is represented in the article as people in the aging population need freedom and enjoyment time after retirement. This desire indicates that the current work environment is not standard in the working environment as people in the retirement age have a significant desire to ensure that they develop an interest in enjoying their leisure after retirement. However, the absence of retirement benefits compels people in the aging population to seek an alternative job to continue catering for financial and health needs. Different countries, such as the United States, have developed intervention strategies such as retirement healthcare benefits that cater to the needs of the elderly in the community. This information is helpful at a personal level because it provides an insight into the activities that are needed to experience a healthy work-life. For instance, I need to focus more on self-employment than working on organizations that increase the level of commitment to work such that there is an imbalance between time committed to work and leisure.

The author of the article shows how to use the various types of data to present data in a manner that is likely to be understood by people in the community. The research identified information that, if shown in raw data, would be difficult for people to understand. However, the use of descriptive data, such as the use of percentage and elaborating the features of the target population, makes it easy for people to understand the meaning of the information in real-life situations (Wildemuth, 2016). For example, measures of spread, such as giving a percentage of data present information related to the number of people with a standard view about their future of retirement. The display of information in this manner indicates that people are in a position to receive and understand the future work environment they are likely to operate.
