The Visual Sample Plan (VSP) is a decision support tool that supports data and sampling analysis used in a site construction. Performers used the VSP to develop a method of separating lead contamination from soil. The support tool ensured that any separation done from particles was removed with a clear and accurate level of confidence. During the sampling analysis, the VSP required input data which was the standard deviation of the data being analyzed. Another input value used was the confidence level and sample estimates that are assumed to be collected for the analysis. With the input data, the developers came up with a hypothesis test which was the “null hypothesis”. The decision was either to accept the null hypothesis if the test is true or reject if the null hypothesis. According to the developers, the null hypothesis stated, “site soil contained lead at a concentration that exceeded the action level of 400 mg/kg.”

Other that the VSP application, developers also used Demonstration of Methods Applicability (DMA) to analyze the samples. Both applications were applied together to study and analyze the impacts of the sampling techniques and instruments used during the test. The sampling decision became easier since the performers collected more sample data which reduced the standard deviation range. The VSP analysis was also used by performers to support anomaly density mapping. The process was used to create location of different parts of a region. The separation was also done using the sampling technique with the application of VSP analysis. The other function of the decision support tool was the delineation of the target area and statistical plan on transect sampling. The support tool makes work easier for decision making processes that involved complex data. The researchers can use sample tests to make a decision using the level of confidence decision.
