The Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) is among the united uniform acts proposed by the national conference of commissioners on uniform state laws. Its main purpose is to harmonize state laws concerning retention of paper records (checks) and the validity of electronic signatures and documents giving them legal binding status. In this deal, Applied Products did business with Beltway Distributors using e-commerce. UETA applies only to transactions in which the parties have agreed to conduct them electronically as done by Applied Products and Beltway Distributors. UETA removes barriers to e-commerce by giving the same legal to electronic signatures and records as to paper documents and signatures.

The authenticity of electronic documents is one of the effects that determine evidence of the parties deal. An electronic document should be regarded similar to the original document if the printout or output is readable by sight or other means reflecting the data accurately. Secondly, copies should be equivalent to the originals. When a document is in two or more copies produced at or about the same time with identical contents, same impression as the original or electronic re-recording that document should be regarded as the equivalent of the original.

The duplicates shall not be admissible to the same extent as the original and questions will be raised on the authenticity of the original. The party’s signature is necessary because it authenticates the manner prescribed as admissible in evidence in court. Furthermore, signatures prevent denial of validity or enforceability of an electronically signed document. The signature also ensures that information contained in the document is correct and has not been altered whatsoever.

In conclusion, UETA removes barriers to e-commerce by giving the same legal to electronic signatures and records as to paper documents and signatures which has accelerated a shift toward employing digital business solutions. Adoption of rules in UETA will be a plus to electronic commerce. It is therefore recommended that every state to try and adopt as fast as possible
