Non-deadly force is the force that is not likely to cause death or any physical harm. It is allowed when one is certain that the act is very crucial in defending themselves against a victim's use of inevitable unlawful force. Furthermore, the non-deadly force is governed by certain legal standards as discussed below.

The presence of the officer - The uniform and the vehicle's presence are enough to instill the presence of authority for a subject to give in. Depending on the number of people involved in the situation, officers' larger presence may be required to maintain safety ( Bunker, Robert, 1997). However, the ratio should be reasonable. For instance, if there is only one victim and eight officers show up, this may be mistaken for force continuum. Empty hand submission technique assists to get the police to get the victim in cuffs. Verbal commands issue instructions to the subject and inform them the action that could be taken against them in the case of resistance. Moreover, less lethal weapons such as aerosols and pepper spray are applicable alongside hard control techniques whereby the officers physically attack the individual.

The use of force continuum is a standard that guides law enforcement officers and civilians on how much force may be used against an individual resisting arrest. This is cited case of Graham v. Connor (1989), where it mandated the officers to use necessary force to effect arrest in a situation whereby the suspect in resistance, or in protection of another officer's or a civilian's life, a law enforcement should act in the same manner as an officer of the same caliber should have done in such a tense situation. In order to prepare the police officers, they should be trained on how to react and handle similar cases such situations. This is because it is very crucial to know what is expected of them from the citizens and fellow officers.
