Intersex refers to the existence of both male and female physical and biological anatomy traits which a person was born with. The intersex lacks the cisgender privilege since they find controversies in the categorization of being either female or male gender. The conscious and unconscious benefits which cisgender people have are such as easy interaction with people with no sex identity insecurities. They are not able to fit in either gender without questioning their gender identity and childbirth sex. They are treated less favorable than a cisgender person because of their genetic and biological features.

Viewing cisgender to be the default social gender makes the intersex people face discrimination, rejection, and lack access to cisgender benefits such as easy identification of a person as female or male at numerous daily situations. They face difficulties of which gender identity to identify themselves of having in situations requiring categorization of people with their genders in places such as schools or the washroom. The lack of cisgender privilege makes intersex people have an intersex phobia of receiving negative attitudes and feelings. They fear their intersex gender being known and consequently receive discrimination from friends and for people to laugh at them. For example, they have the intersex phobia and insecurities of wearing clothes such as swimwear which may show their intersex physical traits.

In The Rumor film, Ross, who is intersex but identifying herself as female from her dressing and gender identity is receiving discrimination, critics, and embarrassment for being intersex and hiding her intersex identity from them since birth. Some are criticizing and laughing how the girl's parents must have flipped a coin to identity her a girl for having a penis and female features. She seems to be emotionally tortured with some straining to see the penis and others telling her to remove her shirt to prove that she is intersex. She is in denial of being intersex which implies the lack of cisgender privileges and intersex phobia which has been going through. She is emotionally crushed to hear everybody at school knows the rumor and her identity of being intersex makes her lack the cisgender privilege of being in a relationship and going out with her male friends.

Some are laughing at her while others shocked by the intersex revelation. Her insecurities of dating and have sexual intimacy is proven by how her identity made men avoid her such as Adam Carter. The short film shows how being known as intersex imposes a person with intersex phobia. An intersex person has to identify him or herself with either being female or male to avoid the intersex phobia or lacking the societal cisgender privileges. Also, the film has background laughter which implies that the film is depicting how being intersex is laughable.
