Change is an inevitable step that most businesses have to go through to attain lucrative performance. In most cases, especially in the contemporary corporate landscapes, business have to reinvest themselves as a means to increase their market share, improve the degree to which their products and services satisfy consumers, and attain a competitive advantage (Formato et al., 2017). Panera, just like any other business corporation, has identified and resorted to exploit an existent market gap in the breakfast market. In the context of capacity management, the concept of service operations is based on customization while manufacturing tends to employ standardization as an approach to maintaining consistency in the output (Wiener-Bronner, 2019). To be precise, in service operations no two clients will be subjected to similar services, the services will often be tailored to meet the tastes and preferences of the individual consumers; hence, propagating a higher degree of consumer satisfaction.

Prior to exploring the impact of capacity on a business, it is integral to define capacity management. Capacity management is the approach of ensuring a business in right-sized and better positioned to attain its full market potential. For instance, capacity positively impacted the last company that I worked in by expanding the entity’s customer base (Vos et al., 2019). By adoption online marketing and ecommerce tools, apps, and websites, the business was able to attain its full market potential, as was depicted by the surge in the sales volume. When expanding the capacity of a firm to meet the expected demand it is integral that market trends, cost, and the projected profit margin is considered.

A restaurant like Panera can expand its capacity by diversifying its product offering, offering not only quality breakfast, but also one that is unique and cannot be easily replicated by the firm’s competitors, and ensuring cost-efficiency is upheld.
