With the advance in cultural and societal exploration, matters concerning sexual orientation have been explored. As such, it has made me understand sexual orientation. Sexual orientation refers to who I am sexually attracted to. There are several sexual orientations which I can identify myself with; they include straight, homosexual, lesbians, asexual, bisexual and pansexual. The existence of the various orientations has revealed that, by identifying myself with any one of them, there is a tremendous influence on the opportunities and the obstacles that I can face in my life. Some of the influences include the career choices I have to make, the schools I have to attend, the religion I can belong to and the composition of people in my social circle. The influences have a tremendous impact on what I become in the society, the probable life I lead and the people I am likely to associate with. Furthermore, the limitation to a particular way of life presents its associated obstacles that I must overcome. For instance, having a few career choices forces me to train and practice a given carrer irrespective of whether it is my preference or not.
My decisions about life are guided by the knowledge that sexual orientation has an enormous impact on life. For instance, whereas being a straight individual I have a more extensive range of careers to choose from, the lesbian, gay and bisexuals are limited to the public sector, medial and academic research which are less homophobic as compared to banking, primary teaching, and secondary level teaching. Secondly, I get psychologically prepared when I am about to undergo processes that expose my sexual orientation. Such processes include job interviews. The psychological preparedness enables me to overcome the adverse effects of discrimination or stereotype that may arise. Lastly, being aware of my sexual orientation makes me choose my friends consciously. My friends are constituted to provide guidance and encouragement and not be the source of discrimination and arousal of internal conflicts.
