This day started much busier than the day before. In total, today, there were close to 35 students who visited the school clinic, either sick or injured. On this busy day, I managed to do almost all assessments on the students visiting the clinic. I got to tag along with the occupational therapist for some time observing before getting into the day’s work.
The day started with rounds alongside the occupational therapist, with the first patient being a child with Down syndrome. The exercises we help him do help improve his motor skills to allow him to write with a pencil. I thought he was a very kind and sweet little boy. His face looked as innocent as his smile.

Our next stop was a pre-K classroom. This class reported students who appear to experience some developmental delays and in need of specialized intervention. Here we practiced hand coordination with several children in many fun games and exercises. Later in the day, we experienced and discussed an instance of possible child neglect. The discussion required a report to the principal in the presence of the school counselor. We then treated and then thoroughly checked the sister to a little girl with an itchy head that we later discovered was from head lice. As the day progressed, we dealt with a bloody nose, earaches, headaches, stomachaches, and sore throats.
This was my last day in school nursing and it was remarkably much more eventful. I can attest that a school nurse is quite a busy person, at least in this school. Each day the nurse handles everything from medicating, documenting, and provision of essential emotional support.
