The story is about three girls who entered the grocery store (A&P) barefoot and in bathing suits. Their leader who the narrator describes as Queenie leads the other two girls around the store without turning to look at anyone. Other customers were shocked for they were not used to seeing bathing suits at the A&P. After paying their bill, Lethal, the manager of A&P argues with them saying that they should dress the right way subsequent time or never come back to shop there. Lethal tells Sammy to loop the girls up, he does what was told then says he was quitting. Based on the story, the teenagers dressing code was inappropriate considering they were in a public place.

Q1

The climax of this story is important as the narrator says that everyone’s windfall begins to run out. The reader can visualize the girls attracting everyone’s attention due to their indecent dressing code which the manager of the store provoked. Through the entire story, it is evident that Sammy’s tone in telling the story does not match the story itself. The tone is dull and unmoving. Sammy at the end of the story is affected by the teenage girls, despite that, Sammy does not appear to be linked to the matter emotionally.

Q2

The age variance between the women in the story gives the onlookers a view of age and maturity. The teenage girls are outfitted in bathing outfits demanding that they are suitably dressed . This differs with the elder women who are dressed properly to be in such a store. The men in the store are not pleased with the girls’ code of dressing as the manager tells them not to come back while dressed in that manner. This predicts that, teenage girls run around doing whatever they want and how they want it, unlike, women are always outfitted well for whatsoever situation they are placed in.

Q3

The background of the story shapes the intuition and its connotation with detailed descriptions of the store which makes the reader of the story to think. For instance, when Lethal says that they are in a store that they should be wearing proper clothes for. The descriptive and detailed language throughout the story reveal to the reader that the teenage girls were partially naked in a grocery store, and without shoes. The story is descriptive and comprehensive on how the store was laid out in a pattern and how the girls looked like.

Based on the above story, the speaker is not announcing up-front that he was going to make a choice that is life-changing. The readers, however, at the end of the story are still expressively allied to agree with the narrator’s decision. The teenagers’ dressing code was inappropriate considering they were in a public place.
